"The race will start and finish in a vibrant atmosphere at the centre of the idyllic market town. There is a gentle climb for the first 3K, followed by a short descent and the rest of the course is flat. Approximately 7K of the course is on the road, with the remainder taking place on footpaths in beautiful surrounding countryside and along the tow path of the Kennet and Avon Canal, which passes directly through the town centre. Here are my notes from when I ran it a few years ago: 'this 5M is on rural roads in/near the outskirts of Banbury - there is a shortcut behind the school across its playing fields to the start - the start is in Browning Road which is in a housing estate off Bloxham Road - at the 1M marker, there is a slight hill - there is a big hill before the 3M marker and a slight dip at 3.6M - it is flat from 4M onwards and there is a slight decline to the finish which is near to where Bloxham Road joins Queensway.' This course map is useful as it not only has the route of the race (marked in red) but it also has the shortcut from the Race HQ to the start (marked in blue) and the route from the finish back to the Race HQ (marked in green)'.

Deddington Four Farms Challenge

"The races start with a short on-road section down Castle Street, Hopcraft Lane and St Thomas Street to Chapmans Lane. Here the routes follow a track through Leadenporch Farm at which point the two routes diverge. The 5K turns left and follows a bridleway back to the Clifton Road where it joins the pavement back to Deddington and the Castle Grounds. The 10K/20K carry on via a bridleway across Appletree Farm and Manor Farm into the village of Clifton. Here you turn left along a short section of pavement before taking a footpath on the left through Home Farm. This takes you back across the fields and joins the latter part of the 5K route back into Deddington." Being a little longer than the standard 10K run, this attracts middle and long distance runners as well as fun runners and walkers. The run joins the Test Way around 8/9K and The Clarendon Way at around 10K, crossing the River Test several times in the process." "Walkers are asked to start behind the runners." Here are my notes from when I did it in 2010:
'This is a gorgeous run that takes place around Houghton which is a village in the Test valley that is about halfway between Salisbury and Winchester. It's mainly off-road: it starts with a long gentle climb along a rutted cart track; then down along rough tarmac; uses a footbridge to bypass a ford (or you can run through!); then there is a narrow footpath that climbs gently up through a wood (where you are warned to watch out for tree roots). The rest of the course is either flat or downhill, again on rough tarmac, on wide bridleways/cart-tracks or on grassy footpaths through fields where there are two stiles. The route also passes a bluebell wood, a magnificently preserved disused railway station and several bridges across the River Test.' "As well as the 11K, there are also a canicross 11K, a 4K fun run and 32K and 14K cycle rides."

Here are the details about a previous event: ' "The race starts/finishes in Spiceball Country Park." The course is a shaped like a letter P, the out and back bit being about 5M long. This out and back bit starts along narrow paths in the Park. It continues on a footpath that accompanies the A423. The first hill is alongside this main road at about 1.25M. Just after 2M, the course leaves the main road and ventures into the countryside visiting the villages of Little Bourton, Great Bourton and Cropredy. At 5M, the circular 5M bit of the P starts. Here there is a short hill and at 6M there is a longer hill. At the top, you reach a village called Claydon. In my opinion, the nicest part of the course is between 6.5M and 8M: so peaceful on a quiet, narrow lane that crosses the Oxford Canal (between Claydon and Appletree). Unfortunately, this tranquillity is shattered by a significant hill at 8M (and in the future by being only 1K from 225 mph trains on the HS2 railway line). Just after the 10M marker, you complete the circular bit of the course. Just after 11M you meet the last hill which is on the approach to Great Bourton. You know it's coming as you went down it on the way out!'.

Here are my notes about the race from when I did it in 2011: The Goring 10K takes place on undulating rural lanes and footpaths but there are also three or four hills. The race starts at the bottom of a hill outside Goring's Fire Station. The hill climbs from 60m to 95m and lasts about 1K. The race then uses country lanes, 1.5K of the Ridgeway through South Stoke, more country lanes to re-visit the highest point of the course about 1.5K from the end. So you then go down the 1K hill you did at the start but you then run pass the start to do a few meanderings around a housing estate before finishing on the field behind the School.
Tip: if you're wishing to finish fast but are tired at the end of the race, these meanderings can be confusing. So the last 0.5K are worth checking out when you are warming up - have a look at the bit from the START to the FINISH shown on the course map.

One of the Oxfordshire XC events (for certain clubs) taking place on Nov 2nd at Cornbury, Dec 13th in Oxford (TBC), Jan 4th in Oxford, Feb 1st at Guiting Power and Mar 1st at Henley.
Venue for Round 5 was to be the Henley Showground, Greenlands. However, the "ground conditions at Henley Showground are struggling after the continued recent rainfall which means the Estate Office have cancelled all major events to protect both the ground and the people attending".

This Facebook post says "Round 5 will now take place on March 1st on farmland close to Finmere, just over the county border into Buckinghamshire." "There is hard-standing parking at the site of Finmere Car Boot Sale, just off the A421 roundabout, nearest postcode is MK18 4AG. The gates will open at 0800. Lions Club of Winslow 10K Road Race

It leaves Winslow and passes Verney Junction, Sandhills then East Claydon and returns via the Granborough Road to Winslow. (With a bit of a climb to finish, so keep something back!)" A map of the area shows the course varying from about 85m to 113m. When I ran it in 2010 I found a long gentle incline lasting from 3.5K to 5K and another short one at 5.5K. As mentioned above, the cruel bit was at the end: there was a steep hill from 9K to 9.5K. Needless to say, this is where the official photographer was positioned to catch all the grimaces!
